Parents, students, faculty and Staff of the Columbus Independent School District,
Columbus I S D has been notified by the law enforcement agencies that the person responsible for the threat that caused CISD to cancel classes today, has been detained. There is no longer a danger. The suspect is a juvenile, and therefore, Columbus I S D cannot provide any further information. We ask that parents continue to monitor your students’ social media pages, and report anything that would be cause for concern. C I S D appreciates the help we received from parents and students who reported this post. Columbus I S D will not tolerate these types of threats and will seek full prosecution for any situation of this nature. Thank you for your patience, understanding and support.
Law enforcement has identified the person who made the threat and there is no longer a danger. The suspect is a juvenile so the district cannot divulge any further information. CISD asks parents to continue to monitor their children’s social media and encourage your child to say something if they see a message that would create a concern. We will still have a strong police presence tomorrow. Again, because students and parents took this situation seriously, we have avoided a potentially horrific incident. Thank you all.
Update on school closing:
Due to the fact that our schools were closed today, we need to inform you of changes to after school activities. All athletics practices have been cancelled for today. The junior high volleyball match has been moved to Thursday night in Columbus. The Greenhand supper has been moved to tomorrow night.
Also, as a reminder, ALL visitors must be ready to show a picture identification to visit our campuses. Again the district is working with local law enforcement, as well as the FBI and the Texas Department of Public Safety - Texas Division of Emergency Management in trying to determine who made the threat.
We will resume classes tomorrow at our regular times, with an increased police presence. Thank you for your support and understanding.
On September 23, 2018, just before midnight, the Columbus Independent School District Administration received word that a threat had been made against our district on a social media website. Columbus ISD takes the safety of our students and employees very seriously and it is our top priority. This situation has been turned over to the local law enforcement authorities, and Columbus ISD will continue to cooperate with our local authorities. It is the hope of the Columbus Independent School District, that the person who made the threat is prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law.
Columbus ISD would also like to thank the students who saw this post for letting their parents and school authorities know about this situation. We also want to thank the adults who contacted the local law enforcement authorities.
